Kay Patterson, CPA

Kay was born and raised in Sanford, North Carolina. She began her career in 1977 as a paraprofessional accountant with a local CPA firm. She was encouraged to take the uniform CPA exam and became certified in March 1985.

In April 1990, DMJ opened its Sanford office and Kay continued her service to the firm and its clients during the transition. In November 2017, she was promoted to Manager and she has focused her career on individual and business tax compliance.

Kay is a member of Turner’s Chapel Church in Sanford where she serves as Co-Treasurer, Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee, AWANA club leader, and Ladies Connect Group leader.  She has also served on various non-profit and civic boards including holding the office of treasurer.

Kay lives in Broadway, North Carolina and enjoys reading, dancing, traveling and spending time with her family and her two cats.

When Individuals Require Appraisals for Their Charitable Contributions

If you donate property to a charity, you may be required to get an appraisal. IRS requires donors and donee organizations to supply certain information to prove a taxpayer's right to deduct charitable contributions. If you donate an item (or a group of similar items) of property worth more than $5,000, certain appraisal requirements apply. You must get a "qualified appraisal," attach an "appraisal summary" to the first tax return on which the deduction is claimed, include other information with the return, and maintain certain records.
