GREENSBORO, NC - Guilford County Sheriff’s Department’s 11th Annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics North Carolina was held Saturday, February 26, at Wet N’ Wild Emerald Point. Davenport, Marvin, Joyce & Co., LLP (DMJ), a Greensboro accounting and consulting firm, celebrated its 11th consecutive year plunging for Special Olympics North Carolina. This year, DMJ celebrated its 11th year, raising more than $12,075. Plunging for DMJ (pictured right to left) was Jonathan Peddrick, Laura Hartley, Drew Saia, Kim Scott of DMJ Wealth Advisors, and son of DMJ Partner Milton Howell, Matt Howell.
The event, organized by the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department, raised more than $50,000 and drew a crowd of more than 250 who cheered on dozens of teams from across the Piedmont Triad community with local organizations exhibiting.
DMJ’s involvement with Polar Plunge traces back to the event’s beginning. DMJ’s Managing Partner, Mike Gillis, CPA, PFS was the first “plunger” in 2000 and has been followed by many colleagues who have risen to the challenge despite a decade of rain, snow, sleet, and freezing temperatures! Dana Beeson, CPA, PFS, a Partner at DMJ and cycling coach with Special Olympics, was awarded the Bronze Level Presidential Service Award for her years of volunteerism.
Special Olympics North Carolina represents more than 38,000 athletes and supporters and provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Each year in North Carolina, Special Olympics hosts approximately 9,200 sports practices and 400 competition events. For the first time since 2004, Special Olympics North Carolina is not in the Governor’s version of the State of NC budget which was submitted by Governor Beverly Perdue.
