A Dedication to Special Olympics North Carolina Becomes an Annual DMJ Tradition

12th ANNUAL GUILFORD COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT POLAR PLUNGE FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS NC - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2012

GREENSBORO, NC - Guilford County Sheriff’s Department’s 12th Annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics North Carolina was held Saturday, February 25, at Wet N’ Wild Emerald Pointe.

Davenport, Marvin, Joyce & Co., LLP (DMJ), a Greensboro accounting and consulting firm, led the effort raising $14,260, earning the top award of Most Money Earned, and celebrated its 12th consecutive year plunging for Special Olympics North Carolina. This weekend’s event raised more than $42,000 for the 38,000 athletes of North Carolina.

The event, organized by the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department, drew a large crowd who cheered on dozens of teams and fundraisers from across the Piedmont Triad community. It is reported that the water was a chilly 34 degrees!

Long hours and late nights come with the job in the accounting profession, especially when April 15 is quickly approaching. But, how about jumping into a pool filled with ice? DMJ’s involvement with Polar Plunge is an annual tradition that traces back to the event’s beginning. DMJ’s Managing Partner, Mike Gillis, CPA/PFS, was the first "plunger" in 2000 (known as "the guy in the suit") and has been followed by many colleagues who have risen to the challenge despite a decade of rain, snow, sleet, and freezing temperatures! Dana Beeson, CPA/PFS, also a Partner with DMJ and cycling coach with Special Olympics, was awarded the Bronze Level Presidential Service Award for her years of volunteerism.

Special Olympics North Carolina represents more than 38,000 athletes and supporters and provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics provides training, support, community, inclusion, and participation for athletes with no cost to them or their families.
